Spun cotton balls / Spun paper balls?
The terms “spun paper” and “spun cotton” are often used interchangeably.
However, “spun cotton” is actually a misnomer: what are often referred to as “spun cotton balls” are technically “spun paper balls.”
We are also guilty of having used the term “spun cotton balls” in the past (and you can still find this term throughout our website). From now on, we will be using the term “spun paper balls.”
How to use Spun Paper Balls
Paint them
We recommend acrylic paint because it is widely available, dries fast, is opaque, washable in most cases, and also works as a protective layer.
If you are making ornaments, you can also consider effect paints such as glitter, shimmer, pearl, or metallic. You can even create texture and add thickness by mixing paint with sand or gesso.
You can also use a pen or marker on spun paper balls.

Glitter them
You can sprinkle your shapes with glitter and give them a beautiful, vintage shimmery look. There are so many types of glitter to choose from: glass glitter (to “sugar” ornaments), snow glitter, metallic glitter, iridescent glitter, and even glow-in-the-dark glitter.
To glitter your creations, simply brush on a thin layer of regular white craft glue, then sprinkle glitter over your shapes (using a spoon) above a small container. Wait for the glue to dry and… voilà!
Glue them
Don’t hesitate to glue other materials onto your spun paper balls. Glue adheres very well thanks to their fibrous texture. You can embellish the balls with fabric, colored paper, golden trims (Dresden), ribbon, lace, mousseline, crepe paper, or chenille stems.
You can also glue spun paper balls to each other to create original shapes.
Accessorize them with miniature objects
For example, if you are making a snowman, you can accessorize it with a miniature hat, broom, and scarf. You can also create scenes with mini animals, trees, houses, and more.
Turn them into beautiful ornaments
Spun paper shapes share a common characteristic: they have a small hole on one side, a remnant from the manufacturing process. You can use this feature to easily turn your creations into ornaments.
Simply dip a hanging loop into a little glue and insert it into the hole. To make a hanging loop, use a small piece of wire: wrap it a few times around the handle of a paintbrush, then twist the excess wire 3 to 4 times.
